History

In the late 1960s, Bishop Maurice Schexnayder recognized the need for a Catholic elementary school on the eastern side of Lafayette. When St. Pius X Parish was established, he challenged the founders with procuring at least ten acres so that an elementary school could some day be built next to St. Pius X Church.

Dr. Louis Leonpacher donated the ten-acre tract on which the church and school stand. In 1993, under the direction of Msgr. Richard Mouton, pastor of St. Pius X Church, the first steps were taken to build a school.

In 1995, the first pre-school for three and four-year-old children was opened with Mrs. Shirley Alexander as director. Three kindergarten rooms were added to the Pre-K facility and classes opened in 1997. Dr. Catherine Janes was appointed first principal.

During this same period, planning for a new facility began. The parishioners of St. Pius X Parish pledged to build a new school for the new millenium.Temporary facilities were utilized from 1998-2000 for grades one and two.

In August, 2000, the new St. Pius Elementary School opened its doors for the first day of school. Our 77,000 square foot complex features an administration area, guidance complex, 25 classrooms, two science labs, a library and multi-media center, a dining hall and kitchen, music complex, auditorium, gymnasium, and student commons area. The total facility accommodates Pre-K through the eighth grade.

Ms. Donna Lemaire was appointed principal of St. Pius Elementary School in 2001 and continues to serve in that leadership role. Adding one grade each year since its inception, the school filled to its full capacity of 732 students with its first eighth grade class in 2005-06. Members of that class are now high school seniors of 2010.
