DIBELS At-Home Activities to Support Reading Proficiency
2nd Grade

DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) is used to assess the following areas in 2nd Grade:

Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF)
Children with strong phonics skills know the sounds of letters and are able to blend them together to form words. On
the NWF assessment, the student is shown a “nonsense word” containing 2 or 3 letters (e.g. bim, ob) and asked to
read the word. Your child is given credit for each correct sound and additional credit if he/she reads the word fluently
without pronouncing each individual sound in isolation. Nonsense words are used to determine if a student is
connecting the sound to the letter rather than recognizing the word by sight.

DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency (DORF)
On the DORF assessment, the student reads three passages appropriate for his/her grade level for one minute and
then is asked to retell what was read. The teacher calculates the words read correctly (Words Correct– WC), the
student’s accuracy rate, and the number of words he/she uses to appropriately retell what was read. Retelling the
story or text is important because it provides an indication if the student not only can read the words, but can
understand what he/she is reading as well. The median WC, accuracy and retell will be used as the student’s score
on this assessment. The quality of the student’s retell is based on a 1- 4 scale {1 represents Two or fewer details; 4
represents Three or more details that captures the main idea}. Although this scale is not used to determine the
student’s overall score, it provides helpful information for instruction.

At-home activities are a great way to practice and reinforce early reading
skills. Within each file, several activities are included. All activities can be
accessed by scrolling through the entire document. Each activity begins
with an objective, a list of needed materials and a step-by-step description
of the activity. Activities are sequential and build upon the previous task to
a greater depth of understanding or level of challenge.
