Volunteer Opportunities


At St. Pius Elementary, we encourage all parents to get involved with their child’s education in any way they feel they can. We see how important it is to our children to see their parents involved. Whether it is working in our Dining Hall every once in a while when schedules permit, assisting with planning our Annual Spring Gala or working a shift at one of our major events, volunteering helps our parents get to know other SPES families AND helps them to learn more about how we live our school mission in everything we do!

Below are areas in which you can help out at SPES this coming school year! Note that the opportunities listed here are for school-wide functions, events and activities.  The "Classroom Helper" category listed on the sign-up form covers all classroom-specific activities. 

Remember…SAFE ENVIRONMENT certification is a must when volunteering at SPES.

SCHOOL HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE: We believe that part of living our mission is making everyone who visits SPES feel welcomed. Hospitality is very important to us whether it involves classroom events such as our PreK parent breakfasts, the Kindergarten Mardi Gras breakfast, quarterly Breakfasts with the Principal, our Eighth Grade Farewell luncheon, our ever-popular Grandparents Days or any of the numerous events we host. We would love to have volunteers to help us spread the SPES Hospitality throughout the year!

DINING HALL VOLUNTEER: Have an occasional day off or extended lunch hour? Come to school during any of our lunch periods and help our Dining Hall staff serve lunch. You will have an opportunity to see your child(ren) and their friends while helping the lunch ladies!

LIBRARY ASSISTANT: At SPES we love to read and instill the love of reading in our students. Be a part of that by assisting our librarians, Mrs. Judice and Mrs. Margaglio, whenever you have some free time.

PARENT SPIRIT COMMITTEE: This subcommittee of the PTO assists in boosting participation in school events, preparing for our annual Homecoming celebration, helps promote family “tailgating” – the SPES Way – during football season and helps out in promoting SPES SPIRIT for all of our extracurricular competitions!

MISSION/MINISTRY VOLUNTEER: Whether called to pray for those members of the SPES family in need, asked to be present for an hour one month at Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, called to assist with a school-wide service project or assist Mr. Matt Hebert, our Assistant Principal of Mission and Ministry, with the Seder Meal or other religious celebration, our Mission and Ministry Moms and Dads will have the opportunity to become more active in living our mission and helping our children to understand what “bringing the presence of Christ to others” really means!

COUGAR CLASSIC GOLF TOURNAMENT: Held in late-March or early-April, this is a great day for golfers and non-golfers alike! Our dads spearhead the planning but both moms and dads are needed on the day of the tournament to help with registration, set-up, tear down, hospitality on the course and food stations at various holes. With the amount of fun our volunteers have each year you can hardly call it a day of “work!”

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT: Come to school once a month and teach a class about basic business practices, free enterprise and entrepreneurialism. This program provides age-appropriate grade level lessons so all you have to do is commit to come to your assigned class for six consecutive weeks, put your personal touch on the lesson plans and help our children develop their business acumen!

RESTAURANT NIGHTS: Each month, for our SPES Restaurant Spirit Nights, we need a helper to either put out the reminder signs the evening before our Restaurant Night, helper to deliver the homeroom flyers to the restaurant before Restaurant Night begins, someone to pick up the homeroom flyers the day after our event and someone to handle the logistics of making the homeroom winner party happen! Sign up here if you feel you might be able to help out …. Even if it is only one month of the year!

ONGOING CAMPAIGNS: We are close to earning $10,000 each year on our BoxTops for Education, Community Coffee Labels, Restaurant Nights and other ongoing campaign programs. Though very simple programs, they require a little man/womanpower to organize, clip, count, package, mail, etc. Much of what is needed can be done at home (sort, count and bundle a bag of labels) or even by offering 10-20 minutes once a quarter (move the collection bins from the Advancement House to school at the beginning of the week and back at the end of the week). These things may seem so small but they make a huge difference.

GALA PLANNING COMMITTEE: The SPES PTO’s largest fundraiser takes place each spring. An online auction in April which features SPES family-offered items, services and trips is the kick-off function of the gala. The Spring Gala is a casual yet grand end-of-year celebration for SPES parents, grandparents and friends featuring fun and frolic and the popular SPES Lip Sync Challenge. This, too, is one of those SPES PTO functions that is so much fun to help plan that it really cannot be called “work!”
